Just because the weather is cooling down, it doesn’t mean our pool is! Here are 3 reasons why year-round swimming lessons are valuable to your child’s development.

Consistency in Swimming Builds Skills Faster

Children thrive on routine and if you keep their swim lessons part of their weekly routine, they will shine as a swimmer in no time. Swimming is closer to learning a language than learning to ride a bike; if you don’t use it, you lose it. Swimming uses different muscle groups that are not used on land, and during developmental years it’s important to instil the basics as regularly as possible.

In short, it’s important to build consistency in physical activity and confidence during these developmental years. It’s easier than starting, stopping, and then starting again. This is also one of the main arguments in favour of year-round schooling due to a child’s time off in the summer creates a learning gap, otherwise known summer learning loss.

Improved Class Availability in the Off Season

Swimming safely in the water should be second nature for every child. However, children are rarely able to develop the skills they need when they only spend a few months of the year in the water. We encourage parents to take advantage of year-round swimming lessons until their child reaches an advanced skill level and can swim confidently, but still gaps exist outside the busy months in Spring and Fall.

As a result, availability for lessons is actually better during the winter compared to the summer. Along with continuing studies, this makes the fall and winter an excellent time to begin private swim lessons for your child at a very young age.

Outdoor Activity is Difficult In the Winter

It’s easy to become depressed from the lack of sunlight in the winter, and it’s common for children and adults to become bored and restless during the long winter months. Indoor activities such as reading and playing video games can only provide so many hours of entertainment before children begin to feel the urge to run, jump and play. In this sense, indoor swim lessons are both physically and psychologically beneficial.

For example, exercise is beneficial for strengthening immune systems and keeping adults and children safe from illnesses.

At CSS, we reinforce the right technique at the right time, and we’ve found that children develop these techniques faster with year-round instruction. As your child progresses, their strengths and weaknesses will be continually evaluated to help modify their lessons and support them to become a confident and capable swimmer quickly.
