- 15% of all drownings happen in backyard pools
- the majority of those 15% involve children aged 1-4 years old
- 85% of those drownings involve absent or distracted supervision
- 100% of those drownings are fully preventable
The “ABCD”‘s of SWIM SAFETY for Backyard Pools
- A – always watch your kids: active supervision, no distractions
- B – be able to swim: sign up for lessons year round, start as of 3 months
- C – checklist for securing your pool: permanent fence with self-closing and self-latching gate, retractable ladder for above ground pools
- D – discuss the rules with your kids: write out the rules, post them visibly, and talk about them
